Putting Words, Images and Ideas to Work

How to Be a True Leader, Not Just a Boss

“Russell Ewing, a British journalist, said: A boss creates fear; a leader, confidence. A boss fixes blame; a leader corrects mistakes. A boss knows all; a leader asks questions. A boss makes work drudgery; a leader makes it interesting. A boss is interested in himself or herself; a leader is interested in the group.”

The above quote is excepted from a terrific article I read this morning, reposted from the NY Times Business section, originally posted on August 11, 2012. The article  was part of an interview with Bill Flemming, president of Skanska USA Building Inc., conducted and condensed by Adam Bryant.

In it, Flemming explains his leadership style, how he runs meetings, and views on leadership. It’s chock full of great ideas. The Skanska site, incidentally, is also a very nice example of a website, well done.

    Hey Suzy,

Congratulations on the blog! I really enjoyed reading the article on NYT Business. It reminded me of a great article I read in an HBR issue where the CEO of the Gilt Group shared his views on leadership and running a suite of successful companies. I feel that true leadership is an amalgam of strategic vision, courage and humility. A leader needs to have vision, the courage to act on it and the humility to lead and learn!

    Good luck!🙂

Hi Batul. Thanks for taking the time to check out my blog! I’ll have to investigate those references – thanks for forwarding them on.
